I bought my first Doo Wop record (a 78 RPM) in 1954
at the age of 10. I was a regular listener to deejay
shows broadcast on New York radio: Jocko Henderson, Alan Freed, Alan
Fredericks, Murray the K, Cousin Brucie and “Slim” Irving
Rose.
I would often take the Long Island Rail Road and subway to go to Times
Square Records. Jenny worked there and had a younger sister, whom
I dated for a while. I attended several shows at the Apollo,
Brooklyn Paramount and at the Island Garden.
This music is in my blood! My car license plate reads “Doo
Wop.” I may be getting older but no one said I had to grow
up! I’m still living in the fifties, with no immediate
plans to be anywhere else in the near future.
